Manchester United’s No.1 Edwin van der Sar, returned to training on Monday for the first time since taking an indefinite leave last month, BBC Sport reports. The 39-year-old was in his native Holland to receive treatment on a knee injury when his wife, Annemarie van Kesteren, suffered a brain haemorrhage, forcing the goalkeeper to take a leave to care for his spouse.

Van der Sar has been out of action since the 21st of November, completing the full 90 minutes in a 3-0 win over Everton. In his absence, manager Sir Alex Ferguson has entrusted Tomas Kuszczak to deputise between the sticks over England hopeful Ben Foster.

With the rest of the squad out on a four-day training camp in Qatar however, the former Ajax keeper will not be able to train with the rest of the team until their return. Van Kesteren is believed to have not suffered any permanent damage from her brain haemorrhage.
