Real Madrid new-boy Karim Benzema is eager to prove his worth to manager Manuel Pellegrini after fellow striker Gonzalo Higuain has been ruled out for at least three weeks with a muscle tear in his left leg. The Argentinean, who has been prolific in front of goal with 13 in 19 appearances, sustained the injury in Real’s 2-0 win over Mallorca at the weekend.

I do not want to miss this opportunity,” Benzema said to Marca after a training session. “I now have to prove I can play on this team. It seems that my coach is preparing for the final stretch of season, and I want to be a part of that.”

Benzema has only been used sparingly since his transfer from Lyon in the summer, often utilised a substitute rather than a starter. The 22-year-old has managed 6 goals in 18 appearances for Los Blancos so far.
