Celtic’s Gary Caldwell is set to leave the Scottish giants, but his destination is still uncertain after Wigan made a last-ditch attempt to lure him to the Premier League. The highly rated defender seemed certain to rejoin Gordon Strachan with Championship side Middlesbrough, but the latest offer may prove too tempting to refuse.
According to ESPN Soccernet, Wigan chairman Glen Whelan said, ”We knew the lad was keen to work again with Gordon Strachan at Middlesbrough but we wanted him to come here and made him a very good offer. You always think a player will fancy a crack at the English Premier League rather than the Championship.”
Caldwell, who is something of a cult hero at Celtic, was named the Writers’ Player of the Year last season and would be a welcome addition wherever he decides to ply his trade.
