According to reports in the British press, Portsmouth goalkeeper David James is set to join Stoke City on loan until the end of the season. It is believed the reason for his proposed transfer has much to do with the financial problems Pompey are currently going through.

With a clause in his contract reportedly triggering an automatic contract extension if a particular number of appearances are made, the Ali Al-Faraj owned club are keen to avoid the situation. Should the transfer push through, the 39-year-old will face the tough task of dethroning current first-choice Stoke keeper Steve Simonsen.

James’ imminent departure could be just the start of numerous departures from Fratton Park, with the club currently embroiled in financial uncertainty. Defender Younes Kaboul and Winger Nadir Belhadj are also being tipped to move in the January transfer window.
