Under pressure Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez faced the press before the match with Stoke City and insisted that the club had progressed under his leadership, and also that expectations were too high.

Benitez, who has led Liverpool to a run of four wins from their last 10 games that has seen the club go out of the FA Cup and Champions League, said he was clear on the progress made since he took the job in 2004.

"Who has won the league in the last years? Who has won the Champions League? If you analyse who has won in the past then that is the reality. It is also a reality that Liverpool have won four trophies, been to seven finals, got to 82 and 86 points, the highest in the club’s history."

The Spaniard also feels that expectations at Anfield are too high.

"We know the expectation from the start was too high but now we have to manage the situation."

Benitez also appealed to the fans, stating that he believes they understand the situation.

"The fans are clever. They understand that Bill Shankly, the most famous manager in the history of the club, went many years without winning."
