Olympiacos have confirmed the sacking of coach Zico and his assistants, after a statement was released on the club’s official website. The famous former Brazilian international leaves his post after recently joining the Greek giants in September 2009 from CSKA Moscow, where he also suffered a short stint as manager.
The legend footballer, whose exploits in management include leading Japan to the 2006 World Cup finals and an Asian Cup trophy in 2002, also experienced great success as manager of Turkish club Fenerbache. In his first year in charge, he famously won the league title and the Turkish Super Cup. Also responsible for the club’s first ever involvement in the Champions League and subsequent passage into the quarter-finals, Zico is arguably the most successful Fenerbache manager to date.
Despite being second in the league and qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League, the Brazilian has been deemed surplus to requirements at Olympiacos.
