In a speech to students in Dublin, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has made a warning to his present crop of highly-paid players after revealing the philosophy that has helped him remain in control at Old Trafford for more than two decades.

Control is very, very important because if I lost control of these multimillionaires in my dressing room, I’m dead," Ferguson said. "So if anyone steps out of my control, they’re dead. The most important person in Manchester United is the manager."

These words from the wily Scot brings back memories of such players as David Beckham, Paul Ince and Roy Keane, who were all subject to the manager’s “deadly” treatment after they stepped out of line.
