Sunderland have completed their first signing of the January transfer window by acquiring Sheffield United defender Matthew Kilgallon. The 26-year-old joins the Black Cats for an undisclosed fee on a three-and-a-half year deal.

Manager Steve Bruce said in the club’s official website, “Matthew is a very talented defender and has been coveted by a number of top-flight clubs recently, so I’m very pleased to have brought him here. He will add to our options across the back ahead of some very important games. I’m sure he’ll prove to be a great signing for the club."

Kilgallon, the 2008/09 Sheffield United Player of the Season, has been a first-team regular in the Blades squad for the last two seasons.
