European nations hoping to host the 2018 World Cup have been handed a boost after Fifa President Sepp Blatter revealed only European candidates would be considered. This means England, Spain-Portugal, Russia and Holland-Belgium are the likely destinations of the prestigious tournament in 2018.

From what I’ve discussed with the president of Uefa, Michel Platini, in the last few days in Moscow is that only a European candidate will be evaluated for the 2018 World Cup," Blatter said in The Guardian. "It’s still not decided, but it’s an idea to help facilitate the work of Fifa and its executive committee."

Should it be decided so, Australia, Japan, the US, South Korea, Indonesia and Qatar will be left to contest for the 2022 World Cup, whose winner will also be announced in the executive committee meeting in December.
