According to ESPN Soccernet, Adam Johnson could be Roberto Mancini’s replacement for Robinho, who looks increasingly likely to be heading back to Brazilian club Santos before the window closes. The U-21 and Middlesbrough star has attracted plenty of interest for his impressive displays in midfield, with Chelsea and even Real Madrid believed to be tracking him.

With the 22-year-old’s contract expiring in the summer, Championship side Middlesbrough may opt to cash in on a sizeable transfer fee from Manchester City while they still have the chance.

Johnson, who has scored 12 goals from midfield already this season, has turned plenty of heads with his rise to prominence following the departure of former Middlesbrough favourite Stewart Downing to Aston Villa. Robinho’s exclusion from the City squad in yesterday’s clash against Manchester United increases the likelihood that the former Real Madrid man is set to leave Eastlands.
