Birmingham vice-chairman, Peter Pannu, has admitted the decision of club owner Carson Yeung to reveal the availability of £40M for transfers in the January window, hurt The Blues’ chances of acquiring players for the proper amount.
“It was not particularly helpful that our president indicated a desire to buy players in January and spend some money," said Pannu in The Guardian. "I think that raised expectations among the clubs that we approached. But, having said that, Carson stuck to his word and executed what he promised. The other side just shied away. We would have had Pavlyuchenko if [Spurs] had not backed off from the original agreement.”
Although Birmingham managed to capture Michel from Sporting Gijon and Craig Gardner from Aston Villa in the transfer window, they failed to sign Tottenham’s Roman Pavlyuchenko, who manager Alex McLeish has shown great admiration for. With the failure to capture the striker, The Blues will have to continue the second half of the season without the much needed reinforcement in their forward line.
