Host nation Bangladesh have ended an 11 year wait by winning the gold medal in the South Asian Games, surprisingly hammering Afghanistan with a resounding 4-0 win. The Bengal Tigers last claimed the title in 1999 in Kathmandu. Having strived to improve the level of football in the country in the past decade, the nation has been rewarded, being crowned regional champions.

“I am happy with the result and satisfied with the way the boys performed,” said Serbian 57-year-old Zoran Djordjevic, who was appointed Bangladesh coach a month before the tournament, to FIFA’s official website. “Since I took over, I have believed that Bangladesh have the potential to be a good football nation. But there is still a long way to go for us with a lot to be achieved and a lot of improvements to be made.”

Despite losing the finals, Afghanistan showed their football quality with impressive performances throughout the tournament. Striker Belal Arezou caused a particular stir, dazzling supporters with surprising ability.
