Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted at the possibility of sticking to the 4-5-1 formation that has worked to perfection in Manchester United’s crucial wins over Manchester City in the Carling Cup semi-final and Arsenal in the league. The Red Devils face the formidable challenge of Aston Villa on Wednesday night, and the Scottish tactician may be tempted to leave the rampant Wayne Rooney alone at the top, in a counter-attacking setup.

Speaking to the latest issue of Inside United, Ferguson said, "Some people say you have more chance of scoring by playing 4-4-2, and in some cases that might be right, but if you score and you’re playing 4-5-1, you then have a great opportunity to open the game up because the opposition then have to take risks."

Despite opting for what is seemingly a cautious approach with the 4-5-1 formation, United have surprisingly used the tactic to deadly effect, looking more dangerous than they have ever displayed this season.
