After a little more than a year-and-a-half in charge of Belgian side Standard Liege, László Bölöni has chosen to resign after a tricky second season in charge. The 56-year-old, who was appointed in July of 2008, won the league title in his first year in charge, but has only managed to lead his side to sixth place this season, currently 24 points behind leaders Anderlecht.

A club statement said, “Due to the current situation of the team, László Bölöni today offered his resignation as head coach of Standard de Liège. His contract therefore was ended by mutual consent. The board wants to thank László Bölöni for his achievements since his arrival in July 2008, at national as well as European level."

Dominique D’Onofrio, brother of vice-president Lucien, has been named as Bölöni’s successor. The 55-year-old was Standard’s technical director between 2002 and 2006.

Spurs have drawn four of their last seven games, throwing away an opportunity to solidify their Champions League qualification hopes. Their quest to break into the top four continues when they visit Wolverhampton tonight.
