Manchester United closed the gap on Premier League leaders Chelsea to just one point after pulling off a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa, while Everton dramatically came back to stun Carlo Ancelotti’s side 2-1. The Red Devils played more than an hour of the match with ten men, as Nani, despite making contact with the ball, was sent off for a rash challenge on Stiliyan Petrov.

Sir Alex Ferguson had no qualms about the referee’s decision, saying to MUTV, “I thought it was a red card. He’s not a malicious player, but it was a naïve tackle; he went in with his foot raised off the ground and we can’t complain about it.” The Scot added, "It’s a pity of course because he’ll now miss the Carling Cup final and two important league games against Everton and West Ham.”

Nani has been in sparkling form in his last four appearances since coming back from a lengthy injury spell, but will now face three domestic matches out. He could however, feature in United’s crucial clash with AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday should Ferguson see him fit.

Spurs have drawn four of their last seven games, throwing away an opportunity to solidify their Champions League qualification hopes. Their quest to break into the top four continues when they visit Wolverhampton tonight.
