Two-time European Golden Shoe winner Diego Forlan has gone a long way since he started his career in Independiente in 1998 as a 19-year-old youngster. The Uruguayan international has enjoyed spells at Manchester United and Villarreal before he joined his current club Atletico Madrid in the summer of last season. With so much experience in Europe’s top flight, he explains to Fifa.com how he has changed since he first broke into his nation’s World Cup squad in 2002.
“I’ve spent a lot of time in Europe and I’ve gained much more experience in the process," Forlan said. “I was more of an out-and-out striker then (2002 World Cup), whereas now I’m still a front man but I play more of a creative role. I think I’ve become a better player since then.”
Despite a lacklustre spell in the Premier League with giants Man United, the prolific forward has impressed greatly in his Spanish adventure. Although Forlan is unlikely to match last season’s amazing 35-goal tally in this campaign, the Uruguayan standout is prepared to showcase his goal-scoring prowess in the World Cup in the summer.
