Marseille defender Souleymane Diawara had the unenviable task of trying to defend against Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo when their clubs clashed in the group stages of the Champions League. In both matches the teams played, the phenomenal Portuguese attacker proved too much for the French side’s defence, scoring twice in each game.

Offering advice to Lyon centre-back Jean-Alain Boumsong, Diawara explained the difficulty in marking the former Ballon d’Or winner in France Football, “Boum if you understand. The advice I can give you to stop Cristiano Ronaldo is to break his leg if you can not do anything. There is no technique. You know Cristiano Ronaldo should not be given an inch. He is a very difficult player to mark.”

Ronaldo will be aiming to end Real Madrid’s disappointing run of matches against Lyon tonight, when his side visit the French giants in a highly-anticipated Champions League tie.
