The Premier League are considering the possibility of implementing a play-off system for the fourth Champions League spot, similar to that used in the Championship for promotion in England’s top tier. Should any change be agreed, teams from fourth to seventh will have a mini-knockout tournament to decide who will be awarded the highly coveted place into Europe’s elite competition.
Everton manager David Moyes explained his views about the proposed change, saying, “I always think your league position is judged over all the games and where you finish is where you finish. So to give a team that finishes three or four places down the table could be a little bit unfair. Nevertheless, the Championship play-offs for promotion into the Premier League have worked very well so it might be something worth looking at.”
Any implementation of a play-off system will need to be agreed upon by 14 of the 20 top flight clubs, and will need to wait for another three years as TV agreements have already been set in place.
