Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that he repeatedly misused Wayne Rooney last season. With Cristiano Ronaldo in remarkable goal-scoring form, coupled with his reluctance to defend, the English forward was forced to play in wide positions on numerous occasions throughout the campaign.
“We probably didn’t use him properly last season," Ferguson said in the Premier League’s official website. "We probably exploited his eagerness and enthusiasm to play anywhere. But we know his strengths, we know where he’s best and that’s where we’re using him this season."
Rooney has now scored 25 goals in all competitions, two more than his highest ever total. With around 15 games or more left to play, depending on how well Manchester United do in the Champions League, the 24-year-old looks certain to impressively break the 30-goal mark.
