With Chelsea’s Ashley Cole seemingly unlikely to be fit before the World Cup and Wayne Bridge publicly stating his intentions not to join the England set up, speculation occurred that Arsenal youngster Kieran Gibbs could recover in time to feature for his country in June. Manager Arsene Wenger however, has been quick to play down such expectations.

There is a little chance if all goes well now,” said Wenger when asked if Gibbs would be fit before the end of the season. The Frenchman added that he wouldn’t even be sure if the player would have enough games to play should he return from injury, saying to the club’s official website, “I don’t know yet because I cannot give you any date of his return to football. It’s very premature at the moment, he is still in a little cast and we are at the beginning of March. But I believe he will play one day for the national team, I am convinced of that."

Gibbs has been out with a broken metatarsal since late November of last year.
