Sporting Lisbon convincingly defeated Everton in the second-leg of their Europa League tie to end a remarkable eight-game winless streak. The Portuguese giants are having a very disappointing season, knocked out of both domestic cups, and are trailing league leaders Benfica by 20 points.
“We needed this win and we deserved it," Tonel said in UEFA.com. "We gave an excellent, very focused display. We controlled the match perfectly against a team who are not easy opponents. Our football caused them problems and we managed to exploit that, keeping and passing the ball with patience."
Sporting have the opportunity to salvage their season by winning the club’s first European trophy since their 1963/64 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup triumph.
