Chelsea and Portugal have both been handed a significant blow with news that right-back Jose Bosingwa will be out for the rest of the season, and will need a second operation on his nagging knee injury. The Portuguese defender has been out since October for his club, and will now have to miss the world’s biggest international tournament as well.

“Bosingwa will be out for the season and have another operation, so that’s him unfortunately, and he’ll miss the World Cup as well,” Chelsea assistant Ray Wilkins said in the club’s official website, before adding that the long-term injury, “just needs clearing up.”

In other injury news for The Blues, Ricardo Carvalho is a doubt for Chelsea’s weekend match against Stoke, and Michael Essien, Ashley Cole and Petr Cech are all still in recovery from different knocks.
