Barcelona president Joan Laporta remains confident in his side’s ability to defend their La Liga title despite losing the standings lead to high-flying Real Madrid at the weekend. The Catalan giants had to equalise twice through Lionel Messi to salvage 2-2 draw against Almeria, in a match that saw both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Pep Guardiola sent off.

I am convinced that we will capture the League because we have a very talented team and we rely on ourselves,” Laporta said in the club’s official website. “With ten players the team was always facing an uphill task and we will not make any excuses for the result."

Barcelona are now in second place in the La Liga standings, but are trailing leaders Real Madrid only on goal difference.
