Real Madrid’s dream to play the Champions League final in their home ground, the Santiago Bernabeu, came to an end last night as Lyon fought back from conceding an early goal to draw 1-1 on the night, winning the tie 2-1 on aggregate. Manager Manuel Pellegrini was understandably disappointed, but claims his side will continue to fight it out with Barcelona for the La Liga title.
"We played well in the first half but missed two clear scoring chances. The team was worried about hanging onto the 1-0 in the second half until Lyon scored. We all dreamed about playing the final in the Bernabeu. The team is devastated,” Pellegrini said on the club’s official website. "I take full responsibility. This is a huge setback, but we have to get out of this rut and continue fighting for La Liga."
Real Madrid are currently at the top of the Spanish league standings, leading rivals Barcelona only on goal difference.
