Much speculation has surrounded Manchester United captain Gary Neville about the possibility of retirement at the end of the current season. The fiery defender has found appearances hard to come by since his return from a long-term injury absence, and at 35-year-old, many see the right-back becoming surplus to requirements at Old Trafford. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson however, believes the skipper still has what it takes to succeed at football’s highest level.
“I can see him playing on next season,” declared Ferguson on the club’s official website. “He’s a player who has got where he is in life because he’s got the will to do it. As I’ve said before when you’ve been out injured for a year and a half it’s not easy. We don’t play him every week because we know the nature of his body, but on an occasion like Wednesday he was outstanding.”
Neville was tasked with shadowing AC Milan’s crafty Ronaldinho in midweek, a challenge that, much to the surprise of many, he handled impressively.
