Aston Villa will try to get their top four ambitions back on track when they visit the JJB Stadium to play Wigan tonight. Martin O’Neill’s side slipped to six points off fourth placed Tottenham Hotspur after their draw against Stoke City at the weekend, and will be hoping to cut the lead, starting with a victory over the unpredictable Wigan Athletic.

They’ve had a strange season. At times they have played brilliantly in matches and then they’ve had some other indifferent performances,” O’Neill admitted on the club’s official website. “They beat us on the opening day of the season and within a few weeks were losing heavily to Man Utd at home and Tottenham away. They shipped in nine goals at White Hart Lane but their winning over Liverpool just over a week ago was fantastic.”

Villa are currently seventh in the Premier League standings, but have played two games less than Spurs, who are currently in the coveted final Champions League qualification spot.
