Everton youngster Victor Anichebe admits he is still carrying hope that he will be called up to the Nigeria squad for the World Cup in June. The 21-year-old scored his first goal since his return from an 11-month layoff at the weekend, and is hoping his extended spell on the sidelines will not keep him from joining his national team in South Africa.

"I am just looking at playing for Everton as I have been out for so long. It would be hopeful to think about the World Cup but we will just have to see what happens,” Anichebe said on the club’s official website. "The season seems to have flown by for some of the players but for me it is just nice to be playing as I have only returned for the end of it. I am just happy to be involved."

Anichebe returned at the end of January after suffering a horror challenge from Kevin Nolan in February of last year.
