Sevilla were stunned as they watched CSKA Moscow reach the Champions League quarterfinals for the first time and shatter their European ambitions in the process. Manager Manolo Jimenez believes his side gave their all, but his decision to implement a cautious approach cost his team their place in the quarterfinals.
"Sevilla gave everything they had, and sometimes you are rewarded and sometimes you are not. We were able to level before half-time, but then came a goal from Honda and finished the game well,” Jimenez said on the club’s official website. “We could not do more, and the result was fair. It was said that they lacked rhythm, but in truth they took plenty of time to prepare for Sevilla. In today’s match, we did not want to be out of the tie and didn’t come out with more pace, and in the end this has cost us a defeat.”
The painful loss makes it five games without a win for Sevilla in all competitions.
