Lionel Messi has been on an absolute tear in the last few games for Barcelona, scoring back-to-back hat-tricks in the league after another three-goal haul in the weekend’s match against Real Zaragoza. He scored twice against Stuttgart in the Champions League as well, taking his tally to ten goals in his last four games.

Manager Josep Guardiola revealed his Argentinean scoring phenomenon almost didn’t play in Sunday’s match, saying on the club’s official website, “He had an infection in the tooth, on the gum line. But this morning he told me he was fine and wanted to play the whole game. For me it would be hard to stop watching him in this state. He’s still a kid in that sense that he always wants to be out there on the pitch."

Messi is now Europe’s leading scorer with 34 in all competitions, overtaking Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney by a single goal.
