Liverpool got off to a dream start at Old Trafford yesterday, but it didn’t last very long. Less than ten minutes later however, Manchester United were back level after Antonio Valencia was deemed to have been brought down by Javier Mascherano in the penalty area – a decision that manager Rafael Benitez believes is one of many that have gone against his side this season.
"We made a great start and Fernando scored a very good goal but I felt we conceded too early. The penalty was the turning point for them and it made a big difference,” Benitez said on the club’s official website. "We were playing well and we had confidence and one situation changed everything. We are disappointed but you cannot change these things. Sometimes they go your way but this season more than we expected things have gone against us.”
Liverpool are now in the precarious position of being sixth in the league, four points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, and having played a game more.
