Luis Fernandez has been appointed as Israel’s new head coach to end the long wait for a long-term successor to Dror Kashton, who has managed the side since 2006. The 50-year-old will officially get his tenure underway on the 1st of May, ahead of the nation’s friendly matches against Chile and Uruguay.

He (Fernandez) understands the mentality of Israeli soccer and nobody will be able to say that he does not know the Israeli game," Israel Football Association chairman Avi Luzon said on UEFA.com. "I believe in him and I’m sure we will all be smiling on our way to the EURO finals."

Israel has not qualified for a major tournament since the nation’s qualification to the 1970 World Cup.
