Rafael Benitez has revealed that battling midfielder Javier Mascherano is getting close to securing a new contract that will extend his Liverpool stay. The Spanish manager is a big admirer of the former West Ham United player, who is considered one of the core members of The Reds’ squad.
"Every fan knows he’s a very important player for us, a key player who’s good for team spirit. He’s an example for a lot of players,” Benitez said on the club’s official website. "He shows every game his commitment, desire and passion. He has great character, but he can also play. He’s a player every manager would like to have in their team."
The 25-year-old Argentinean is considered a vital piece in the Liverpool midfield, and with goalkeeper Pepe Reina seemingly set to stay on as well, The Reds are slowly securing the club’s future.
