Having already lost Mariano Gonzalez to a serious knee injury, Porto will now also have to cope without Silvestre Varela, who suffered a severe ankle injury, for the rest of the season. The latter’s need for surgery on Saturday all but rules out his chances to be part of Portugal’s World Cup squad in June.
“These serious injuries are always particularly difficult moments in the life of a player," said Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz on UEFA.com. "So I want to send him (Varela) my best wishes to recover as quickly as possible."
28-year-old Gonzalez, who has been capped by Argentina 11 times, underwent surgery yesterday to fix his damaged cruciate ligaments and is also certain to not be playing until next season.
Sevilla have fallen to fifth in the league, six points behind Valencia who are in third-place, the position the club finished in last season.
