West Ham United heaped more pressure on themselves to escape relegation last night, slumping to a 3-1 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers to remain precariously close to the drop zone. The Upton Park crowd were visibly disappointed at their team’s performance and were venting their frustration at the players, something that striker Benni McCarthy feels the side fully deserved. The South African is confident however, that the club will avoid relegation this season, and will be ready to impress once again in the next.
"We’re heartbroken to be in this situation, but we’ve got to come together and stand tall. If we do, we can get the results and see the season out,” McCarthy said on the club’s official website. “When we stay in the Premier League, we’ll come back next season and not make the same start and find ourselves in this horrible situation again."
The Hammers finished an impressive ninth in the Premier League standings last year, a far cry from their current position of 17th, three points above the drop zone.
