West Ham United have heaped more pressure on themselves and their under-fire manager by losing to Wolverhampton Wanderers and remaining tantalisingly close to the relegation zone. In defence of his team, boss Gianfranco Zola has come out to claim that all the criticism should be aimed at him rather than his underperforming side.
"The team is not playing well. I take responsibility. I am personally hurt because I didn’t expect a performance like that – it is painful," said Zola on BBC Sport. "It is a big blow. For me personally and the team. These are the moments when you have to react."
And react quickly the team must, as The Hammers are given a chance to win back their fans’ support when they host Stoke City on Saturday.
