Portsmouth followed up their impressive weekend win to Hull City by getting completely thumped by title contenders Chelsea 5-0. To add insult to the embarrassing scoreline, the rock-bottom club lost Ricardo Rocha and Tommy Smith who both needed to be pulled out before half time with facial injuries.
“With Tommy I don’t think there was anything untoward from [Daniel] Sturridge. It was just a coming together of two players, the kind of thing that happens in football,” Portsmouth coach Paul Groves said. “Ricardo’s gone to hospital to assess the extent of the damage, which is in and around his cheekbone, while Tommy has broken his nose. So we’ll have to see how they are and whether they will be available for the Spurs game on Saturday.”
Portsmouth are also already without Nadir Belhadj, Papa Bouba Diop, John Utaka, Hassan Yebda, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Tal Ben Haim.
