Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has claimed that a Europa League semi-final spot is still within the club’s grasp after their 2-1 defeat to Benfica last night. The Reds were forced to play much of the game with ten men following Ryan Babel’s sending off, but Carragher is adamant that the loss has not dented their hopes.

"It’s only half time" said the Liverpool stalwart. "The plan was to keep it tight and nick a goal, which we got early on. Obviously the sending off has a big part to play" Carragher told Liverpoolfc.tv.

Despite Benfica’s best efforts, a one goal advantage is all they have to show for long periods of possession and pressure, and Carragher believes the away goal Liverpool scored through Daniel Agger could still prove crucial.

"At the moment we’re behind, but a 1-0 victory at home will be enough to see us through, and if we can get that, that’s when the away goal will prove crucial."
