Arsenal were torn apart by Barcelona in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final, with the unstoppable Lionel Messi bagging a remarkable four goals in the match. Defender Thomas Vermaelen was on the wrong end of the hammering, and he admits it was very difficult to stop the current holders.

"We knew before the game that we wanted to put some pressure on them but we couldn’t because of their quality – they have so much pace," said the centre-back on the club’s official website. “I think they were great as well today, they played well, they had good possession of the ball as well and for us it was difficult to defend.”

Arsenal are still in the race for the Premier League title though, trailing leaders Chelsea by just three points.
