Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, who was expected to be injured for another week or so, was a surprise inclusion in the match against Bayern Munich last night, a move that Sir Alex Ferguson admits was a gamble. The talismanic Englishman is feared to have aggravated his ankle problem, after needing to be taken off in the second half.

"We took the risk [in playing him against Bayern]," acknowledged Ferguson on the club’s official website. "We’re just having a look at the situation again. I don’t think it’s serious. It’s just the tissue and a blood vessel that gets burst. We need to give him some more treatment but I’m sure he’ll be okay for next week."

Rooney is expected to be back in time for the crunch Manchester derby against fourth place contenders Manchester City next weekend.
