The Premier League will be the sole competition Manchester United has left to participate in, as the English giants were dramatically knocked out of the Champions League by an exquisitely taken goal from Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben. Young Rafael Da Silva was sent off early in the second half with his second bookable offence, a vital turn in the game that United manager Sir Alex Ferguson felt was unfairly influenced by the German side’s players.

Bayern would never have got through [had it not been for the red card]," the wily Scot said on the club’s official website. "With 11 men, we would have had no problem. Rafael’s a young boy, a bit inexperienced, but they got him sent off. The Bayern players went towards the referee. They’re like that."

Regardless of whether the sending off was warranted or not, Man Utd, upon their exit, have missed out on reaching the semi-final of the Champions league four years in a row.
