Valencia were very close to being the team in the Europa League semi-finals instead of Atletico Madrid, with missed chances late in the second half proving telling in the end. David Villa, along with substitutes Nikola Žigić and David Navarro failed to convert their chances, leaving the club only to rue their missed opportunities.
“We feel pretty bad because we had opportunities to get through, especially in the last period of the game," Hedwiges Maduro said on UEFA.com. "With the match at 0-0 everything was still open but unfortunately Villa [hit the crossbar] and Žigić just couldn’t convert his chance.”
Valencia could take the bad taste of missing out on a semi-final out of their mouths in La Liga however, where they are currently third and in strong position to qualify for the Champions League next season.
