Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has said that the approaching World Cup was a big factor in concluding a move for Mexican striker Javier Hernandez. 21-year-old Hernandez, also known as Chicharito, has penned a deal at Old Trafford for an undisclosed fee and will arrive from Chivas in July.

Ferguson explained to the club’s official website why the deal was done now: "One of our scouts went to Mexico in December and watched a few games – the reports that came back were very good. At that time we thought we’d just wait because he was only young.

"But then he came into the national team and that created a potential problem: If he went to the World Cup and did well at the tournament then we could be in danger of losing him."

While many of the United faithful may be disappointed the club have no unveiled a bigger name Ferguson is in no doubt that these are the type of deals he relishes.

"We identify young talent and we’ve been good at that over the years. These are the kind of signings we prefer to make."
