Robin van Persie made a successful return against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday, making an appearance as a substitute. The Dutchman has been out since November of last year, and is understandably delighted to have the opportunity to help his team keep pushing to get as near to Premier League leaders Chelsea as possible.

No-one really expected this,” van Persie said of The Gunners’ title push. “But when you are this close you really want to win it. When you don’t do that it is frustrating. It felt good and I am happy to be back. But when you are there and your team is behind you want to do something to help them. Unfortunately I could not do that."

Van Persie was initially feared to be out for the season, but his rehabilitation has seen him recover a little ahead of schedule, making him available for the last few matches in the league.
