Wigan Athletic’s push to remain in the Premier League next season was given a huge boost after they managed to overturn a seemingly certain defeat against Arsenal to a vital victory. Young midfielder James McCarthy believes it was the team’s willingness to work hard until the very end that made the difference.
"I thought we had to just keep working hard and keep moving the ball round as well as we were doing in the first-half and the majority of the second-half," said the 19-year-old on the club’s official website. "It just goes to show that football is a funny game and anything can happen. We worked really hard after the break and although sometimes results haven’t gone for us on Sunday they certainly did.”
The win puts The Latics in 15th place in the standings, eight points clear of the relegation zone, with only three matches left in the season – almost certainly safe from the drop.
