Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong insists the heartbreaking defeat to Manchester United at the weekend will not matter so long as the team achieves their goal to be playing in the Champions League next season. With Paul Scholes’ late winner on Saturday, the Red Devils have beaten The Citizens three times this campaign thanks to stoppage time goals.

If we get fourth this will be forgotten – that is football," said the Dutchman on the league’s official website. "If we can get into the Champions League, no-one will be complaining about the four games against United. Losing at home to United is going to hurt. But we are still in the fight. We have to try to bounce back and show people what a great team we are."

Man City relinquished their hold on fourth place in the Premier League as a result of their painful loss to their city rivals, meaning Tottenham Hotspur are back in the driving seat to finish in the coveted spot.
