Chelsea’s long-term injury victim Michael Essien has admitted to not having an idea whether he will be fit in time for the World Cup in June. The Ghanaian international has not featured for his club since December, and although he was expected to return within the season, rehabilitation complications could now see the 27-year-old missing his nation’s trip to South Africa.
“As at now I don’t know. I am just taking it day by day and if I can make it I will. If not then I will have to sit at home and support the team like every Ghanaian,” Essien said on the league’s official website. "Until I know how the injury improves in the coming days and weeks, it will be difficult to say whether I will make the World Cup or not."
The former Olympique Lyon player is a key figure in the Ghana team, and his absence will surely be missed should he fail to recover in time for the prestigious tournament.
