Manager Louis van Gaal was full of praise of Bayern Munich, after his side overcame the sending off of talismanic Franck Ribery, to triumph over Olympique Lyon 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final. The Dutchman believes his team showed real character to dominate despite being a man down, a performance he claims shows the club’s strength.
“I’m very satisfied. We showed Europe tonight how strong we are by dominating with ten men against 11,” van Gaal said on UEFA.com. “I didn’t think we would win 1-0 with [Franck] Ribéry getting a red card, but even when we were a man down we were the dominant side. We created more chances when we had ten men against 11.”
Arjen Robben was the hero once again for the German giants, as the former Chelsea star scored the only goal of the match to give Bayern the advantage ahead of the second leg, to be played in France.
