Sol Campbell put in another commanding and composed display for Arsenal at the weekend, as his side could only hold on for a goalless draw against Manchester City. Such impressive performances have prompted manager Arsene Wenger to suggest the 35-year-old player, who started the season with League Two club Notts County, still has what it takes to mix it up with the best footballers in the world.

Of course [Rio Ferdinand and John Terry] have an advantage because they are younger but if they have a problem in numbers he’s always there,” the French tactician said on the club’s official website. “I do not select the team and I do not say [Fabio] Capello has to take him, I just say you compare him today in the Premier League with the other centre backs then he doesn’t suffer in the comparison.”

With injuries to Arsenal’s backline, Campbell has been called upon more often than expected upon his shock return to The Gunners. Although Wenger’s decision to bring back the aging defender was initially seen as a strange one, few would now argue that the impressive centre-back doesn’t deserve to get his short-term contract extended.
