Having been named the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the year, Wayne Rooney is considered, by his peers, to be the best among the Premier League’s plethora of exceptionally gifted talents. The young Manchester United striker however, believes the best in the world is currently plying his trade in La Liga, with record-breaking side Barcelona.
“It’s nice that people put me up there [among the best], but for me I think [Lionel] Messi is the best in the world,” Rooney said on the club’s official website. “The things he can do with the ball are just unbelievable and he’s scoring a lot of goals as well. He’s been fantastic again this year, so for me he is the best player in the world.”
Only Messi, who has scored 40 goals so far this season, has found the back of the net more often than Rooney, and is proving ever more likely to be crowned the World Player of the Year two times in a row.
