Raul succeeded in becoming La Liga’s third all-time highest scorer at the weekend, netting against Real Zaragoza to bring his total tally to 228 goals over the span of 16 seasons with Real Madrid. The striker has found appearances quite difficult to come by this campaign, with the weekend’s goal, just his seventh of the year.

The night was to be bittersweet for the living legend however, as he sustained a grade two sprain to his right ankle, ruling him out for four weeks, essentially the rest of the season.

Raul has been used mostly as a substitute with the arrival of the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka in the summer, and his goal return has suffered considerably in effect. The Spaniard’s seven-goal haul matches his 2005/06 season total, the lowest of his career.
